TrendLine Saskatchewan - August 2024
Wholesale and Retail Trade, Logistics, Professional, scientific and technical services, Business services, Education, and Information, culture and recreation lead growth into the third quarter of 2024.

Stephen Johnson
MA
Chief Economist
The beginning the third quarter of 2024 saw an uptick in the annual average rate of employment growth to 2.5% from 2.3% the month before. Growth has been led by employment in Wholesale and Retail Trade, Logistics, Professional, scientific and technical services, Business services, Education, and Information, culture and recreation and in full-time positions. However, the unemployment rate, the number of unemployed, and the number of individuals of working age not participating in the labor force are on the rise despite increasing employment as job growth has not kept pace with labour force growth. Housing starts, on the strength of resurgent apartment/condo starts are now level with year-to-date 2023 activity. Exports are down against 2023 year-to-date figures as despite advances in energy exports as farm and food product exports faltered. Inflation is leveling off at 1.5%. Average weekly wage increases are twice the rate of inflation and along with an ever-increasing population base, are influencing rebounding retail sales, motor vehicle sales and restaurant receipts.
