In August 2024, Saskatchewan saw a 2.6% increase in year-to-date employment, with gains in several sectors including resource extraction, manufacturing, retail trade, professional services, and education, while losses were reported in agriculture, utilities, construction, and finance. Full-time employment led the growth, with part-time positions also rising. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 5.6%, accompanied by an increase in the number of unemployed and those outside the labor force. Housing starts declined by 6.3%, while the Housing Price Index saw a 4.6% increase. Inflation was modest at 1.5%, driven mainly by higher food and shelter costs. Retail trade and wholesale trade showed mixed results, with notable increases in gasoline stations and food wholesalers. Manufacturing and exports, however, faced declines, with some sectors like energy products and forestry showing growth. Provincial population rose by 2.7%, driven by international immigration, and GDP growth is projected to slow to 1.8% in 2024. Additionally, the Bank of Canada continued to cut interest rates in response to weaker job data, signaling a potential economic slowdown.
